Lecturer in Continuing Education / Adult Education at the Open University of Cyprus (OUC), and Coordinator of the Continuing Education strand of the Master’s programme in Education Studies, School of Human and Social Sciences, OUC.
She holds a PhD in Continuing Education (1999-2003) (as a State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) Scholar), a Masters in Educational Management Administration & Policy (1997-1998), both from the Graduate School of Education (GSoE), University of Bristol (UoB), UK; and a Β.A. (Honours) in Greek Philology (specialized in Classical Studies), from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (1992-1997). She was an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Postdoctoral Fellow at the Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol (2003-2004), and worked as a Lecturer at the Centre for the Advancement of Learning & Teaching (CALT), University College London (2004-2005), University of London; a Research Fellow at the Graduate School of Education, Bristol University (2004-2005); a Postdoctoral Research Development Officer at the School of Education, Trinity College Dublin, Republic of Ireland (2005-2006); a part-time lecturer at the Departments of Social and Education Policy, and Economics Department of the University of Peloponnese, Greece (2006-2008); a tutor for the Open University in Greece, (2005-2009); a Member of the Committee for the Second Chance Schools (SCS) in Greece, Institute for Continuing Adult Education, General Secretariat for Lifelong Learning in Greece (2005-2008).
Her main research interests are in the areas of Continuing Education and Adult Education: adult distance teaching and learning in higher education; programmes for continuing professional development; education and organization of programmes for adults who have not completed their compulsory education, belong to vulnerable social groups and are threatened by social exclusion; didactics; the use of ICT in continuing and adult education programmes; teacher’s professionalism, professionality and professional development.
She has published in international and Greek peer-reviewed journals (Educational, Technology and Society, International journal of Digital Literacy and Digital Competence, Teaching & Teacher Education, Learning & Instruction, Compare, Journal of In-service Education, Adult Education, Educational Review) and proceedings of international conferences (ESREA, SCUTREA, ECER, EARLI). She sits on the editorial board of the European Journal for Research on the Education and Learning of Adults (RELA) and is a reviewer for various international and Greek Journals (Educational Technology and Society, Journal of Adult and Continuing Education, Teaching and Teacher Education, Adult Education, International Journal of Learning). She is also a Member of professional organizations and bodies (European Society for Research on the Education of Adults(ESREA), American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE), Society for Research in Higher Education (SRHE), Association for the Education of Adults in Greece (EEEE), Standing Conference on University Teaching and Research in the Education of Adults(SCUTREA), and Associate for Propel (Professional Practice, Education and Learning International Network) and Pascal (International Observatory and Link Person with Cyprus).
She has participated as a project leader, principal investigator and researcher in a number of projects including the following (selective):
2010-2013 “Enhancing adult distance teaching and learning in higher education: the case of the Open University”. The project is funded by the Open University of Cyprus (OUC). Project leader and principal Investigator. Four more universities collaborate for the project (Hellenic Open University; Aristotle University of Thessaloniki; University of Kent, UK; Bielefeld University). (70.000 Euros).
2010-2011 “Teaching Computers to Adults: The Case Study of the State Institutes of Further Education in Cyprus”. The project is self-funded. Principal investigator along with colleague Dr. Yiasemina Karagiorgi.
2007-2009 Research on the Second Chance Schools (SCS) in Greece aiming at exploring adult educators’ and their learners’ perceptions and experiences of digital literacy in the context of the Second Chance Schools (SCS) programme. Principal investigator (in collaboration with Dr A. Jimoyiannis, University of Peloponnese). Self-funded.
2006-2008 “Promoting Best Practice in Virtual Campuses (PBR-VC)”. EU funded, part of the eLearning Programme, European Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency. Member of the research team. Department of Social and Educational Policy, University of Peloponnese (Principal investigator, Dr A. Jimoyiannis).
2003-2005 “The professional learning of teachers: From courses to processes”. Principal investigator. The Project was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), UK, 27,000 £ (UK Pounds). University of Bristol, Graduate School of Education, UK.
